The sports world has lost a dear friend as Stuart Scott of ESPN passed away this morning.

ESPN reports that the sports anchor, as famous for his catchphrases as his razor-sharp commentary, died this morning at the age of 49 after a long battle with cancer.

Before his passing, Stuart was honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the ESPYs back in July. During his acceptance speech, which took place right after his birthday and latest round of treatment, Scott shared a few brave words about his condition.

“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer,” he said. “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”

#TeamBeautiful offers up its condolences to Stuart’s family at this time.
