HIS SIDE

I first saw my fiancé at Adelphi University. I was a senior and she was a freshman. I heard rumors that she was attracted to me, but I didn’t really pay them any attention. She was a young girl. She actually had a friend in my class that would use my phone to text her things like, “Guess who I’m sitting next to?” and etc. She would tell me not to read the messages, but as soon as class was over, I read them ALL!!

A couple of years after I graduated college, I went out with my best friend to a club that was close to Adelphi. Lisa was there with her friends. I purposely made my way to the dance floor and acted like I didn’t see her. I had to remain cool. I placed myself in her vicinity and acted like I bumped into her. That was when I got her number. We became friends and I would visit her at Adelphi every time there was a party. We would also see each other at different times and places. For instance, one year, I saw her in Brooklyn at the Labor Day Parade. Another year, I was invited to her aunt’s house for a barbecue.

Six years later in September of 2009, Lisa invited me to a baseball game. Even though I wasn’t her first choice, I jumped at the opportunity to go out with her. This day is what shaped our future. We weren’t really paying attention to the game. We spent all the time catching up with each other and talking about our lives. It was so much fun. At one point, we noticed a couple in front of us preparing to take a selfie. We both looked at each other and had the same idea. We got closer together, smiled and completely photo-bombed their picture. When the couple turned around, we acted like we were watching the game. After the baseball game, we went to Applebee’s where my best friend worked at the time. Lisa was looking great that day so I wanted to show her off. When we got to the restaurant, Lisa didn’t realize how many heads she was making turn. Of course, my best friend gave me a nod saying that he approves. When I took Lisa back home, I told her that I wanted to take her out again, but she didn’t believe me. We officially started dating on November 13th of the same year.

HOW HE PLANNED THE BIG SURPRISE

In August 2013, I took Lisa out on a date. We went to dinner first at Yerba Buena Perry in the East Village. After that, we went to Lincoln Center where there is a majestic water fountain. I thought that this would be the perfect place to propose. I got down on one knee and asked Lisa if she would do the honor of being my wife. She started crying and, eventually, after a few sobs, said YES! It was a great night.

Nathaniel and Lisa will get married on November 13, 2009. We’re so excited for their union and wish them nothing but the best!
