HER SIDE

As a freshman at Adelphi University in 2003, all of my friends knew I had a crush on Nathaniel. He was a well-known senior that seemed to be friends with everyone except me. The only interaction we had were suspicious texts my friend would send me from his phone during a class they had together. Although she never told him my name, she gave other hints to my identity as his secret admirer. We were not introduced until a Midnight Breakfast event at school, an event that gave a free meal and an opportunity to socialize during Finals Week. After that, we were back to being strangers.

We didn’t speak again until the next Fall. The beginning of the semester kicked off with a party at a nightclub that everyone attended. I saw Nathaniel come in and I had to talk to him. While watching him by the bar with some other alum, I casually pushed past him by “accident.” From there, we exchanged numbers and began our friendship. At that time, we were both in complicated relationships, but would spend time watching movies and making inside jokes. Our flirtatious evenings were some of my most fun nights at Adelphi, but we remained friends and continued our previous relationships.

Over the next 5 years, Nathaniel and I kept in minimal contact and occasionally saw each other at social events. On Sept. 23, 2009, my aunt gave me tickets to see a Mets game. I am not a baseball fan, but wanted to check out the new stadium. I sent out a group text to some friends to see who was interested. Nathaniel insisted on going, even though we would be late for the game because of work. What I thought was going to be a boring baseball game turned out to be the first night of my future. From that day on, Nathaniel impressed me with his romance and sincerity. He had always been fun, but the man that I met that night was the love of my life. We officially began dating Nov. 13, 2009.

THE EMOTIONAL SURPRISE

Nathaniel and I went to dinner on August 9, 2013. Afterwards, he took me to Lincoln Center. The night was clear and the fountain was beautiful. While I was chatting and being playful, Nathaniel asked me to be quiet, which I thought was rude, but realized he was quite serious. Nathaniel got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I don’t remember saying yes because I was crying so much. We are now planning our wedding for Nov. 13, 2015. I would have never imagined that my college crush would be my fiancé 11 years later.
