If you’re like us, you binge-watched the second season of “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix this past weekend. For 13 hours, we fell in and out of love with all the ladies at Litchfield Penitentiary — crying, laughing and discussing OMG moments with friends.
Without a doubt, one of the most entertaining and intriguing characters on the hit series is Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, played by the beautiful and talented Uzo Aduba. Her talent on-screen is undeniable, but that’s not the only place where she shines. Since her character wears so minimal makeup on the show, Uzo says she likes to make bold statement every time she walks the red carpet.
“I like strong anything: strong choices, strong voices, strong makeup, strong looks, strong women,” she shares during an interview with Refinery 29. “I like strong plus a noun — that’s my thing. Red carpets are an opportunity to really dress up. It’s like being able to go to the prom all over again. I like the collaboration because there are so many different departments [collaborating], making the stuff. That is what theater is. That’s what Orange is.”
Unlike her character, Uzo says she’s a girly girl when it comes to makeup and colors. “I love Make Up For Ever. I love Illamasqua — their foundation. I love colors on the lip; I just started doing red. That is new to me. I love berries and juicy colors.”
Although she lets her hair down on the red carpet, the actress often wears her tresses in bantu knots just like Crazy Eyes. “I used to wear my hair in the bantu knots. I was doing a show right before ‘Orange,’ and I was wearing my hair like that and then I had the idea to wear it to the audition,” she shares. “I thought that since the show is set in prison anyway, the knots work, and I didn’t think anything of it. I used to wear them [in real life], but I had to stop wearing them because that attention as Suzanne made me want to stop.” Now, she says, “I take them out when we finish shooting.”
And when it comes to beauty icons, the 32-year-old names a “Cosby Show” favorite and Queen Bey as her favorites. “Denise Huxtable [Lisa Bonet] is up there — she’s incredible,” Uzo gushes. “Naomi Campbell is up there, too. She is fierce. Beyoncé, of course. She is slaying it right now; she is slaying the kids. Unbelievable.”
