If you grew up in the 90s, chances are you know exactly who Countess Vaughn is… She was the funny girl on “Moesha” then landed her own spin-off show “The Parkers” and eventually resurfaced on an emotional stint on “Celebrity Fit Club.”
The actress recently appeared on “The Doctors” where she revealed her horrific encounter with lace front wigs. Countess fell in love with lace front wigs when she was first introduced to them by her hair stylist in 2004 and began wearing them faithfully until she discovered an odor that alarmed her.
“The red flag was the oozing from my ears from, my forehead, the whole nape around my head. The puss that horrible smell, it was painful. I let it go by for 6 months,” she told cameras. It turns out, Countess had a severe reaction to the glue that she used to apply the wig. She said she suffered through pain and hair loss and has skin discoloration. The skin around on her ears even fell off.
“I didn’t want to make the connection with that,” Countess said, living in denial to maintain her image of a natural scalp. “I was embarrassed,” she said.
Lace front wigs became popular when women saw how versatile and natural (if done right) the appearance of the scalp looked. Using tape or glue to hold the wig in place is common however, can be very damaging to the scalp and hair if used consistently.
Countess struggled with self-esteem issues and used this experience to instill self-confidence in her daughter. “I had to go through this in order to teach my little one that you have to love yourself before anybody else will.”
Watching Countess break down into tears as she discussed self-worth is heartbreaking. Countess was always a lively character and kept us laughing even if it was at her expense. That bubbly energy is gone and she looks sad. We hope she gets it together.
