Don’t Make Resolutions, Make Revolutions.

It’s 2014 and, chances are, you’ve set New Year’s resolutions that will lead you towards a better life.  Perhaps you want to be skinnier, more organized or better at saving.  Whatever it is, hats off to you for wanting to be better tomorrow than you are today.

Unfortunately, setting those New Year’s resolutions is probably a waste of your time.  Research shows that 92% of people say they fail at achieving their New Year’s resolutions.  If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, than 45% of the American population (the actual percent of people who set new year’s resolutions every year) is officially crazy.  Since the current routine is clearly broken, I believe it is time for a more potent alternative.

This year, don’t set New Year’s resolutions; make revolutionary decisions.

Revolutionary decisions are radical choices that disrupt your current trajectory and propel you in the direction of the future you deserve. These are decisions like taking that new job, starting a family or walking away from the man who has failed to demonstrate the same type of commitment to you that you have shown to him.  Revolutionary decisions are always relative to your current situation, but one thing they all have in common is that they will rattle your existing state of affairs and rock your world for the better.

Revolutionary decisions work for two reasons. One, they force you off autopilot, compelling you to adopt new behaviors that will work in your favor.  Otherwise, it is all too easy to remain in situations that are less than you deserve simply because you are stuck in existing routines. Two, revolutionary decisions refocus you on the actions that really matter.  While your day-to-day routines are important, the outcome of a given year can usually be traced back to a handful of critical decisions made over the course of a year.  The commitment to make revolutionary decisions will force you to analyze your life and zero in on the 3-5 decisions that will actually shape your year.

For most people, New Year’s is a time of change. Why not let your first change be the way you approach 2014 in general?  This year, bypass the customary resolution setting, which will be a distant memory come February anyway, and make the critical choices that will revolutionize your life today.
