Back to school season is officially here and you know what that means, lots of money going out to prepare the kids for the new school year. Supplies, clothes and accessories are mandatory for the new year. Aside from the financial aspect, one thing to also take into consideration is the angst that starting a new year has for many children. And it doesn’t matter if this is kindergarten, first grade, middle school or high school–jitters and nerves are the norm.

So how can you help your child navigate? I have a few tips that will help with the transition!

1. Let your child know that these feelings are normal. Everyone has experienced them at some time or another. If your child is going to kindergarten lots of hugs, love and affirmation that this is a good experience are in order. And quite frankly, no matter how old your child is, a little TLC (even it is a quick hug for the onary teen) can go a long way.

2. Remind them that their new teachers are there to help them. And although the thought of a new instructor might be daunting, at the end of the day the teacher is there as a service for your child and they only want him/her to succeed.

3. Most, if not all, of the other children are experiencing the same type of hesitation about the new school year. Advise your child to look around class and choose to make one new friend/acquaintance to share the experience with.

4. And if all else fails, tell them to imagine everyone in the classroom naked – it might sound silly but it will be sure to work (unless of course you are talking to a teenage boy and perhaps imagining everyone dressed as clowns will be better)!

It’s my hope that these tips will help your child navigate the new waters of the first weeks of school. Keep the lines of communication open and help them as they adjust to the new environment!
