I’ve heard a lot about the BET film “Being Mary Jane,” starring Gabrielle Union. It premiered at the Urban World Film festival earlier this year to mixed reviews. Some critics praised the flick and Union for her acting and some (mainly my source) absolutely hated it! Certainly everyone is entitled to their opinion, but after hearing about certain scenes, I can’t quite comes to terms with labeling “Being Mary Jane” as a positive depiction of Black women. I have not seen the entire film so I will reserved the remainder of my comments until I do.
