A baby girl, born HIV positive is said to be “functionally cured” of the virus 30 hours after she was born! A “functional” cure means the virus is so small, standard clinical tests can’t detect HIV in the blood and lifelong treatment isn’t needed.

It’s being reported that doctors knew the mother of the child is HIV positive and chose to give the child three high doses of antiretroviral drugs her a clean bill of health. The child is now two-years-old and there is still no trace of HIV in her body.

The child’s mother is said to have had no prenatal care and wasn’t diagnosed with HIV until right before the child’s birth. “We didn’t have the opportunity to treat the mom during the pregnancy as we would like to be able do to prevent transmission to the baby,” said Dr. Hannah Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

What’s amazing is that children who are born of HIV positive mothers have a small chance of contracting the virus and it “depends on whether the mom and baby are getting antiviral prophylaxis (preventative treatment) or not,” says Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga.
