Ava DuVernay smashed the indie-film competition this weekend with the release of her film “Middle of Nowhere” which grossed $78, 030. DuVernay–who became the first woman of color to win the Best Director Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for “Middle of Nowhere-is the co-founder for Hello Beautiful!
Released by the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM) and Participant, “Middle of Nowhere” made just about $13,005 per-theater average! I’d say congrats are in order for DuVernay!

Moviegoers in New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia were among the first to see the film and AFFRM plans to expand the film in 16 more theaters in cities including Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Miami and Seattle.
