The California native and co-founder of our very own HelloBeautiful.com recently garnered some real estate in the New York Times with a profile of her film-making career.

DuVernay’s films have been hailed as moving and charismatic. When Ava was a publicist in Tinseltown, alongside A-list directors and actors, she got chance to be a fly-on-the-wall on the set of blockbuster films. It was this part her career that facilitated her next step to make her own films.

In 2011, she debuted “I Will Follow.” The film stars Sali Richardson-Whitfield who played Maye–a woman who has taken time off from her successful art career to care for her sick aunt. Critic Roger Ebert called IWF, “…one of the best films I’ve seen about…the death of a loved one.”

“Middle of Nowhere” which earned Ava the 2012 Sundance Film Festival prize for Best Director of a Drama (the first for a Black woman)–stars Emayatzy Corinealdi as Ruby, a woman who drops out of medical school to focus on the well-being of her husband when he’s sentenced to eight years in prison.

With talent, hard work and business savvy, Ava DuVernay has merited the praise of the Sundance Film Festival, Oprah Winfrey and filmmakers everywhere. So it’s best to jump on this bandwagon before it gets too full because unlike other bandwagons, this one is going places!
