Rihanna quotes are endlessly fascinating, and her most memorable lines and sayings are often as complex as the Bajan beauty herself. Ditto Rihanna’s best lyrics, even though the 24-year-old R&B superstar doesn’t always contribute to the writing of her songs. Rihanna seemingly never sings anything that doesn’t represent who she is, and if that makes her sound calculating, her interviews reveal her to be anything but. Rihanna’s most memorable quotes are the off-the-cuff, completely honest musings of a young woman with interesting views on love and art, and even if people don’t agree with, say, her fashion choices or continued involvement with Chris Brown, who famously beat her up on the eve of the 2009 Grammys, she’s going to do her thing, haters be damned.

Below are 10 of our favorite Rihanna quotes.

“When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work. I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that’s a little off, but I have to figure it out. I have to make it me. I think that’s the thrill in fashion.”

“I’m crazy and I don’t pretend to be anything else.”

This could be Rihanna’s motto. At least she’s honest.

“I hate going to the gym and doing it the old-fashioned way. I hate anything that’s too straightforward, too routine, too familiar. I get bored really, really quickly.”

No, wait—this could be Rihanna’s motto. It should be said that for someone who hates working out, Rihanna sure has a way of keeping in shape. Is it the dancing? The partying? The constant tweeting?

“People hesitate to follow their desires because they don’t know how to divide their soul from their spirit.”

We’re not sure what she meant with this tweet, but we’ll take her word for it.

“We found love in a hopeless place.”

What “place” was she talking about? Planet earth? The world of showbiz? One’s early 20s? It’s an intriguing question, though it’s perhaps not as interesting as who the “we” refers to.

“I just love a challenge, whether it’s a relationship, my career, clothing.”

Forget what we said before—this should be Ri’s motto. This girl just never makes things easy for herself, but maybe that’s why we love her. Just when you think her life is perfect, she tweets a photo of her doing drugs (allegedly) off a bodyguard’s head.

“I may be bad, but I’m perfectly good at it.”

Rihanna didn’t write the song “S&M,” but the folks that did obviously had her in mind.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but chains and whips excite me.”

The most memorable “S&M” line may be an old saying—a cheeky adolescent variation on a childhood rhyme—but Rihanna makes it her own.

“I never play the victim, I’d rather be a stalker.”

Rihanna had a hand in writing the tune “Rockstar 101,” and it’s easy to imagine she came up with this line.

“For me, it’s tougher to be vulnerable than to be tough.”

Rihanna is nothing if not self-aware. Through the years, she’s maintained a steely façade, portraying herself as a woman who’s not going to take any gruff. Could there be a softie lurking beneath the surface?

“Being submissive in the bedroom is really fun. You get to be a little lady, to have somebody be macho and in charge of your s—. That’s fun to me … I like to be spanked. Being tied up is fun. I like to keep it spontaneous. Sometimes whips and chains can be overly planned—you gotta stop, get the whip from the drawer downstairs. I’d rather have him use his hands.”

No wonder her songwriters—like the rest of us—know her so well. Ri shares things other folks keep in their bedrooms, and whether you think she does so in bad taste, you have to admit you’re intrigued.
