These days, anything Chris Brown says, sings or does is to infuriate haters, (aka Rihanna’s Navy) and rally members of Team Breezy–the R&B superstar’s devoted fan base. Ever since Brown beat up Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammys, the singer and dancer has been a divisive figure in the music business. While some still worship the 23-year-old—evidenced by his 2012 album Fortune debuted atop the Billboard charts—others feel he’s never done enough to apologize for his assault, or, to remedy his notoriously bad temper.

Brown’s more memorable quotes and lyrics won’t settle the debate, but they do offer entertaining insights into the man behind the smooth vocals, fancy footwork and endless controversy.

On Women:

“My mother taught me to treat a lady respectfully.”

Man, where do we begin with this one?

On Inspiration:

“Follow your dreams. Just make sure to have fun too. “

Does fun include (alleged) New York City nightclub brawls?

On Comparisons to Other Artists

“I’m not gonna say that I hate it, because I really respect Usher and I was influenced by him. But so many people compare me to him, and I don’t think it’ll ever stop. I just want to be my own artist.”

Here’s the good news, Chris: You’ve certainly got your own reputation now.

On…Um…We’re Not Sure, Actually

“Reality is altered by wanting to be accepted! Originality shapes your destiny!”

We wonder what Brown was doing when he tweeted this.

On Critics

“Haters keep on hating, cause somebody’s gotta do it.”

Indeed, hating is a valuable public service, much like picking up trash.

On Dating Preferences

“I like low-maintenance girls, but at the same time, classy. She needs to take care of herself. But also be a girl who isn’t afraid to get sweaty and play basketball, so it’s cool if she’s a tomboy.”

What about a girl who knows how to box? That could be interesting…

On Sexy Time (via “Wet the Bed”)

“Can I visit all those spots you like? Your neck, your back, your sexy lips, booty and thighs.”

Polite of him to ask, no?

On Artistic Inspiration

“I love attention. If I see a gang of girls? That makes me dance even more!”

Hard to argue with this one. Anyone who says they learned to dance or sing for any reason other than attracting the opposite sex is probably lying.

On the Rihanna Assault

“I am extremely sorry for what I did, and I accept accountability for my actions. At this point, I am taking the proper steps to learn about me and grow from my mistakes. I only hope that others in similar situations can learn from our experience as well. Abuse of any kind is always wrong.”

Seriously, let’s hope he does take steps to prevent this from happening again.

On Staying Positive

“I just hope my music inspires people to really come together. LOVE and POSITIVITY.”

Of course, he tweeted this after he was accused of stealing some girl’s iPhone. Just saying.
