What happens when love takes you places you never thought you’d go? Or better yet, what happens when an independent Black female filmmaker drops her second film in as many years that has all the makings of another indie film phenomenon? You may remember writer/producer/director Ava DuVernay’s first film, I Will Follow, that almost overnight became one of the most buzzed-about films of 2011.
Without any gratuitous sex or violence or drug use, and definitely without any hint of the over-baked spiritual melodrama that has made most Black films of the past few years 30 thirty minutes too long, I Will Follow gave us Black film lovers that good ol’ black magic feeling again because you felt your spirit was made warmer by the experience.
Middle Of Nowhere, again starring the too-easy-to-fall-in-love-with Omari Hardwick in the leading role alongside newcomer Emayatzy Corinealdi, tells the story of a woman struggling with the incarceration of her husband and the love and loss and sacrifice that too many of our sisters experience so often on their own.
Judging by this first hot teaser trailer, Middle Of Nowhere promises to continue Ms. DuVernay’s smart and thoughtful and beautiful style (nothing less expected from the co-founder of HelloBeautiful.com). “I wanted to explore…a relationship where you look up and wonder, ‘How did I get here?’ How am I now this person I don’t recognize?'” DuVernay told The Hollywood Reporter.
Middle Of Nowhere will premiere this month at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Starring Emayatzy Corinealdi, David Oyelowo, Omari Hardwick, Lorraine Touissant and Edwina Findley.
The soundtrack will feature rare music from artists including Me’Shell Nedegeocello, Goapele, Ra-Re Valverde, Fink and Jimi James.
