Oprah Winfrey will be the recipient of an Academy Award this year, and no it’s not a retrograde honor for her role in Steven Spielberg’s adaption of “The Color Purple.”  Ms. Winfrey will be awarded the 2011 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is an honorary award given to someone whose philanthropic work benefit the film industry.

Oprah told Essence.com,”I was surprised because I am not known as an actress. I’ve done film and I love the films that I’ve done.”
