A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Monday morning shooting following a yearly New York City event celebrating Caribbean culture and heritage, DNAinfo New York reports.

Police took Reginald Moise into custody on Tuesday morning. He has been named as the suspect who shot and killed 22-year-old grad student Tiarah Poyau at point-blank range during the J’Ouvert festival in Brooklyn, New York. Moise was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting and claims it was an accident, according to DNAinfo. Police arrested him after he crashed his car in Brooklyn’s Lefferts Gardens neighborhood.

Moise was taken into custody for drunk driving and charged with murder and depraved indifference. Police found Moise implicated himself twice in relation to the shooting.

Immediately after the incident, Moise went to a female companion’s home and asked her to hold the gun. According to the New York Daily News, he fired two rounds into the woman’s wall and broke a mirror, cutting his hand. He then fled, leaving the gun at the apartment.

Police connected the casings in the woman’s home to evidence found at the scene of the crime.

Tragically, 17-year-old Tyreke Borel was also shot and killed a block away from Poyau just 30 minutes prior. Police are still searching for suspects in connection with Borel’s shooting.
