Two black women have filed a lawsuit against the New York Times and its CEO Mark Thompson, claiming he created a culture of “deplorable discrimination” based on age, race and gender at the newspaper, The Guardian reported.

According to the suit,  Ernestine Grant and Marjorie Walker–both in her 60s and who work in the paper’s advertising department–allege that the Times, “which promotes its liberal and inclusive social values, preferentially favors its ‘ideal staffer (young, white, unencumbered with a family)’ at the expense of older female and black employees,” the Guardian noted.

In addition, they also claim that younger white employees were given summer Fridays when older Black employees were not granted that luxury. Plus, they claim they were passed over for promotions while younger and less experienced white employees were paid more.

The Times denies these allegations, saying in statement, “This lawsuit contains a series of recycled, scurrilous and unjustified attacks on both Mark Thompson and Meredith Levien. It also completely distorts the realities of the work environment at the New York Times. We strongly disagree with any claim that The Times, Mr. Thompson or Ms. Levien have discriminated against any individual or group of employees. The suit is entirely without merit and we intend to fight it vigorously in court.”

Lee Daniels, the Oscar-nominated director and Empire creator, has optioned the rights to Jesmyn Ward’s award-winning memoir, Men We Reaped, Entertainment Weekly reported. The book focuses on Ward’s life growing up poor in Mississippi, where race, class and gender are major themes.

According to EW, there aren’t many details about the project, but that this type of project is up Daniels’ alley given his past films including Precious and Monster’s Ball.

Men We Reaped was a National Book Critics Circle finalist and has been labeled a “heart-wrenching” memoir in which Ward “relates the unconnected deaths in the space of just four years of five young men who were close to her,” The Guardian noted.

Ray Lewis’ Son Charged With Sexually Assaulting Two Women

Ray Lewis III, son of former Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis, has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, USA Today wrote.

According to police reports, two women filed charges against the sophomore cornerback for the Coastal Carolina University football team, for sexually assault. The women claim that Lewis allegedly raped them on Saturday, Jan. 23, at an apartment near campus, where one woman claimed she was “incapacitated and/or physically helpless from the use of drugs and/or alcohol,”  WFMB News reported.

Lewis III turned himself into the police on April 29 and was charged with criminal sexual conduct in the third degree. However, his lawyers stress their client did not assault these women.

“Ray Lewis III is innocent of all charged and we expect him to be fully vindicated at the end of this matter,” Case Brittain said.

In the meantime, police are still investigating the alleged assault and are looking for additional witnesses and leads.
