Another day, another Black woman to go missing.
This time it’s 23-year-old Diamond Lewis of Merrillville, Ind., Nwi.com reported.
However, her 2-month-old baby that was also reported missing, was found on Tuesday in nearby Gary and has been sent to Child Protective Services. It’s unknown who exactly the baby was found with given that Merrillville police Detective Commander Jeff Rice refused to release that information to the press. But he did say the child “wasn’t injured.”
Meanwhile police continue to search for Lewis.
According to Lewis’ father, the last time he spoke to his daughter was on April 11. He was prompted to contact authorities on Sunday after going days without speaking with her, which was abnormal for their close relationship.
Lewis is about 5-foot-3,165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Also, she drives a 1999 four-door tan Buick Century with the Indiana license plate WTK341. Anyone with information on Lewis’ whereabouts are being urged to call Detective Cpl. Nate Dillahunty at (219) 769-3531.
Despite the lack of media coverage when African-American go missing, it’s important to note that cases like Lewis’ are not new or rare. According to The Black & Missing Foundation, more than 64,000 Black women remain missing across the United States. In addition, 37 percent of missing minors and 28.2 percent of missing adults in 2013 were Black.
However, we hope and pray that Lewis will return to her family safe and alive.
