The biopic we’ve all been waiting for is coming to the big screen…well almost. The story of supergroup New Edition is headed to BET.

Johnny Gill told Billboard that casting is already underway for the highly anticipated project. “I just want somebody who can capture the essence of me, and I think that’s important for all of us in the movie. That’s going to be the most important thing in telling this story is that these actor capture the essence of who we are” said Johnny.

Oftentimes, biopics don’t have the blessings of the individual’s, their family or estate (CC: the Whitney Houston and Aaliyah movies on Lifetime) resulting in a misinterpretation of the story. Fortunately, Johnny added that he and his bandmates are an intricate part of making sure they’re story will be told accurately.

“We’re hands-on involved as well. We have to spend time with [the actors]. They’re going to spend time with us for a week or two and kinda just get to know us and our personalities and get insight and stuff like that. It’s going to be interesting when it all comes together, but everybody’s gonna get a chance to tell and see what our story’s like. We can’t wait.”

It’s been twelve years since the last New Edition album, the 2004 release One Love. Knowing that the biopic will have fans nostalgic and in their feelings, Johnny shared that the group is planning to capitalize on the momentum of the film by releasing new music and going on tour.

“We’re gonna try to have the album ready to go by the time the movie’s out, by 2017 when the movie drops. I’m making plans to start the recording process with that as well.”

With a minimum of six people giving their input on the film including Johnny and his bandmates Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Michael BivinsRicky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe, there has be to some contention surrounding the production, right?

The hardest aspect of bringing the biopic to life: “I was just disappointed that Denzel [Washington] wasn’t available to play me,” added Johnny with a laugh.
