Taye Diggs says he was shocked by the controversy and backlash he received from his latest book, Mixed Me. In an interview with Steve Harvey, the actor said that people have continuously misinterpreted the message of empowerment in the story about a bi-racial child inspired by his son Walker.

Initially, Taye said he wanted his son to identify as “mixed” because his mother, singer Idina Menzel is Caucasian. Now The Best Man Wedding star has seemingly changed his stance. “I’ll be honest, I would love for him to identify with the black side, because that’s my pride, that’s what I am,” said the actor.

During the interview, Taye and Steve also take questions from interracial couples who’ve experienced backlash from their family’s because of their love. Taye shared that while married to Idina, the couple had to hire a security detail because they would receive death threats.

Why do you think there’s still such an issue with interracial relationships and the way biracial people choose to identify themselves?
