A 25-year-old woman was killed in Norfolk, VA after allegedly waving a fake gun at police, 13NewsNow reports.

India Beaty was reportedly arguing with a man and threatened him with a replica handgun.

Police reports claim the officers exited their vehicles and ordered her to put down the weapon. When India made “threatening” motions with the gun, they fired.

“It’s unfortunate that these incidents have taken place, it’s certainly of concern to the police department and something we will take a strong look at,” said Chief Michael Goldsmith.

One of the officers involved has been with the Norfolk Police Department for eight years and has been assigned to the Investigative Services Bureau, Vice and Narcotics Vision for one year, 13NewsNow claims.

“You can see from the picture it would be hard to tell the difference between that and a firearm,” said Chief Goldsmith.

He continues saying, “Any loss of life is tragic. This morning’s events affect not only my officers and Ms. Beaty’s family members, but our entire community. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ms. Beaty’s loved ones, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we continue this investigation.”

Beaty leaves behind four children. Her brother was shot just two years ago outside of a KFC in Duplin County, NC.

Our hearts go out to the family and friend’s left behind in the midst of this tragedy.
