In a new interview with Us Magazine, Gabrielle Union is giving insight into her personal life as a step mom. “I recognize that I am lucky, not everyone has the same situation” she began.

When the Being Mary Jane star wed NBA star Dwyane Wade, their home became a full house with Dwyane’s three sons, Zaire, 14, Zion, 8, and Xavier, 2, as well as his nephew Dahveon, 13.

She shares this advice for keeping the peace and maintaining a strong family unit. “Be fair, reasonable and consistent,” said Gabby.

“If you’re going to be a pushover, be a pushover. If you’re going to be a disciplinarian, be a disciplinarian. But be consistent so that [the kids] can get used to whoever it is that you are.”

While the 43-year-old has been candid about with her personal issues with fertility, she shares her gratitude for helping to shape the lives of her step kids.

“They are dope kids,” Gabby told Us. “I have a lot of proud moments where I’m, like, in tears. They are smart, they are kind and just all-around amazing kids, and I tell them that.”

Dwyane also loves to dote on Gabrielle’s parenting skills having recently said on Instagram, “2 years ago today we asked this beautiful person to marry us and she said yes!!! Thank you baby for your strength and patience. it’s not easy having a house full of boys to men but you do it with style and grace. We love you. #TheWades
