In 2010 pop star Ke$ha was everywhere. Her debut single “Tik Tok” was certified 5×platinum and it was considered one of Billboard’s “Hot 100 Songs of All-time”. Her debut and sophomore albums went platinum and gold then she seemed to have vanished. For the past year, the singer has been in the midst of a legal battle with her producer, Dr. Luke.

According to Ke$ha real name (Kesha Rose Sebert), her producer Luke Gottwald aka Dr. Luke drugged and rape her during her 18th birthday party in 2006, though he was never prosecuted. She also alleges that he was sexually inappropriate with her on several occasions.

Ke$ha has since enlisted renown attorney Mark Geragos in her fight to be released from her record label, Sony, who has her under contract to create six more albums.

The label’s proposed solution was to provide Ke$ha with different producers but the singer has rejected that alternative because she believes that Sony’s allegiance is with Luke and they won’t market or promote her new music if she’s not working with him.

The Manhattan Supreme Court has since been tasked with making sense of the complicated situation.

Sony and Luke have reportedly invested over $60 million in Ke$ha’s career, a factor that Justice Shirley Kornreich took into consideration when denying Ke$ha’s request.

According to the NY Daily News Kornreich said, “Sony would suffer irreparable harm if Kesha was not compelled to abide by a contract that requires her to make six more albums with the company. The judge added that granting the singer’s request to nullify her deal would undermine the state’s laws governing contracts and the court couldn’t do that.

Christine Lepera, a lawyer for Dr. Luke, said in a statement that the allegations against him “were asserted solely to extort money and gain contractual leverage.”

The 28-year-old and her legal team will continue their pursuit to nullify the contract. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
