Michelle Obama Post Presidency

Please don’t look for First Lady Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama to follow Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton‘s footsteps and make a bid to succeed her husband as president. “What you talkin’ bout, Gayle?” Obama said recently when CBS morning anchor (and Oprah’s bestie) Gayle King asked the question during the Super Bowl pregame show.

King had to be kidding and just doing her job as a journalist because if you know anything about Michelle Obama—or are a stan for MO, like me—you know that though she enjoyed and flourished in her role as First Lady, she’ll be happy to not be in the White House come 2017.

Let’s just keep it 100: Michelle is too fly to be confined by presidential perimeters. Absolutely no disrespect to her husband Barack (who it goes without saying that we love and stand behind with every fiber of our beings), but sitting in the White House for any longer than the next year would be impeding on all the slaying she will do.

What are MO’s plans after the White House anyway? Civilian life won’t be so dull for the First Lady though she’s looking forward to some simple pleasures like going shopping at a big box store. “I want to go to Target,” she shouted during a chat with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.

But it’s also clear that she plans to keep focusing on the four primary issues she’s spotlighted as first lady: childhood obesity, military families and veterans, post-secondary education, and advanced schooling for girls worldwide.

What sticks out most when we think about her post-White House years is the Let Girls Learn initiative she and President Barack Obama launched earlier this year to address the problem of the 62 million girls worldwide who are not in school. “As a first lady, a mother, and a human being, I cannot walk away from these girls,” she said in an essay penned for the Atlantic, “and I plan to keep raising my voice on their behalf for the rest of my life.”

Undoubtedly, there are hundreds of things Michelle Obama could do with her life, so we had some fun thinking about the things we’d love to see her do after the White House.

Become a restaurateur – Celebrity #foodporn aficionado Chef Roble is no stranger to the White House, having cooked for the First Family a few times, so he’d be the perfect chef to team up with Mrs. Obama to open a restaurant. We think these two could combine their tastes for mouth-watering yet healthy dishes for the masses in her hometown of Chicago.

Launch a magazine – With all that she’s shared with us over her years in the spotlight, we imagine Michelle has a wealth of knowledge that we haven’t heard from her about politics, law, health care, love, marriage, parenting, education, fashion, hair, health & beauty…recipes! Wouldn’t it be great to get that all in one place from what we’ve dreamed up as MO magazine?

Resume her law career – This may seem like the most unlikely option for Mrs. Obama because she’s already been there and rocked it. Before entering the White House in 2008, Michelle Obama worked as a lawyer in Chicago (she earned her undergraduate degree at Princeton University and her law degree at Harvard University) before going on to serve in local government as an assistant to the mayor and, later, as assistant commissioner of planning and development, and executive director of the Chicago office of nonprofit organization Public Allies. By the late ’90s, Mrs. Obama was the associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago, the executive director for community affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and, in mid-2005 she became its vice president for community and external affairs. How’s that for a resume?

Consultant for Shonda Rhimes – Yes, Shonda Rhimes is queen bee of Thursday nights on ABC TV and with her own assembled team she’s killing it. But adding a little flair from Michelle couldn’t hurt. With Shonda’s producing skills and Michelle’s legal experience, these two powerhouse ladies collaborating on the legal thriller How To Get Away With Murder would be mind-blowing.

Fashion designer-partner with Jason WuJason Wu is a NYC-based fashion designer most famous for designing many of the stunning dresses Michelle Obama has worn over the years, most-notably the first and second inauguration of President Barack Obama. While Michelle may pass on actually designing gowns herself, a line of evening wear inspired by her would be everything.

Open a kid-friendly health & fitness center – While in the White House, the First Lady launched the Let’s Move! initiative to help solve the challenge of childhood obesity so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Michell’s fitness centers would encourage kids to stay active, work together in a community and have fun.

Whatever First Lady Michelle Obama does after packing her bags and turning off the lights for the last time at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, we know it will be as amazing as she is. And we’ll all get in formation to support her.
