'American Crime' Premiere Event

I’m all here for dramatic TV series that drag you to the end of your couch cushion and leave your chin cradling the ground. And ‘American Crime’ is one of them.

In the temperamental age of social media, crimes that would otherwise go unnoticed by mainstream media become headline news, which serves as the premise for season two of ABC’s ‘American Crime.’ Set in Indianapolis, Indiana, a public school student accuses a private school championship basketball team of sexually assaulting him them posting the photos on the Internet.

Just in case you missed an episode or two (you’re not too far behind, the season just started), I’m going to break down exactly how you should approach it.

Call your bestie, this one gets deep.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Directed by the Academy Award-winning Ridley Scott, ‘American Crime’ is an anthology series like ‘American Horror Story,’ so be prepared to see your favorite characters play totally different roles each season. Regina King, who won an Emmy in 2015 for her role, transforms from a supportive, muslim sister in the first season to a privileged mom who is parenting a high-school basketball star in the next without missing a line in-between.

EYE CANDY FACTOR:

There’s no man candy in this one. If you’re looking for a lead character soft on the eyes, head over to BBC for some Baedris on ‘Luther’ instead.

DATE POTENTIAL (IS IT ‘NETFLIX & CHILL-ABLE’?)

Definitely. This drama sparks great conversation that could shed light on how BAE really thinks (especially on controversial topics such as rape, sports, and party culture.)

WHAT KINDS OF SNACKS & LIBATIONS SHOULD I PREPARE? (I.E. HOW BIG SHOULD MY WINE GLASS BE?):

You can’t go wrong with a glass of wine on this one, especially since you’ll probably be watching after a long day of work. You’ll definitely need something to wash down the shock with.

EMOTION-METER:

‘American Crime’ isn’t a tear-jerker, but it gets uncomfortable at times. The direction of the show throws you for a loop, so be prepared to drop your popcorn when ish goes down.

CAN I WATCH IT ALONE?:

Sure, but you’re going to want to discuss what you’re watching with a friend. Be prepared for major discourse as this show tries you emotionally.

IS IT WORTH MY TIME?:

Totally. Trust me on this one, you’ll be hooked. ‘American Crime’ is super intense, but so damn good. Regina King and her co-stars deliver stellar performances and the plot continually thickens until you’re so submersed, you can’t look away.

The NAACP Image Awards Show is back for its 47th year on Feb. 5. Will you be watching? Tune in on TV One at 8/7 C for the red carpet and 9/8 C for the ceremony!
