Kerry Washington is known for depicting powerful kick-ass women, and her new role is no different.

The Emmy-nominated star will be portraying Clarence Thomas’ former assistant Anita Hill, who testified against him in a controversial sexual harassment case.

The HBO film Confirmation is based on hearings that brought to light workplace sexual harassment and the complications of race relations.

Washington spoke about the difficulty of the role:

“I was terrified. Portraying somebody who’s real is a different kind of responsibility, especially when they’re alive. That significance was not lost on me both as an actor and as a producer, wanting all of these characters to feel real and to matter as much as these people do,”she explained to the Television Critics Association.

In order to do the character justice, Washington spent extensive time with Anita Hill herself:

“She is very private,” Washington said on the ground-breaker. “I felt like that was also something that she and I really shared. The idea of the circumstances of your life thrusting you on the public eye when it’s not necessary shared. That was something we were really able to bond on,” reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is set to premiere in April on HBO.

It will be cool to see Kerry take off her gladiator suit for this new role.
