African American, Female Owned Law Firm Established From A Tweet

Social media brought three black lawyers together in a powerful way. The founders of the Knight, Morris & Reddick (KMR) Law Group were initially introduced via Twitter. In 2011, Yondi K. Morris was venting about her frustrations with her former employer. She posted, ‘I just need to start my own law firm!’ Keli L. Knight, eagerly responded, “Let’s meet to discuss.” And Jessica B. Reddick joined the pair at Starbucks where their logo and business plan were outlined on a napkin. Over the next three years, the Chicago-based firm which handles property tax appeals, real estate, evictions, estate planning, entertainment and corporate law has grown exponentially. KMR also provides legal staffing and mediation. The ladies recently established a west coast division with an office in Los Angeles. They’ll soon have an office in Washington, DC and they’re also looking to expand globally. {The Network Journal}

Airline Suggests Muslim Parents Change Their Son’s Name To Avoid Profiling

Sulemaan Ahmed and his son Syed Adam Ahmed were en route from their hometown Canada to Boston for a hockey game. Their travels were delayed when the younger Ahmed was “Deemed-High-Profile” by Air Canada. Syed is 6-years-old. The boy’s mother, Khadija Cajee says he’s being targeted for his Muslim name and the profiling has been consistent regardless of what airline they travel with. Allegedly, the Ahmed family has been advised by airlines to change the boys name.The family had previously reached out to Canada’s transportation and public safety department to get clarity as to how the child, who was born in 2009 could have been added to this suspected terrorist list. The response was that the government could neither confirm nor deny that such a list exist. Well Sulemaan captured undeniable evidence with he was able to see the computer screen for the airline’s ticket kiosk which clearly said his son was not to board the plane because was “DHP”. The social media post went viral and officials have since acknowledged that they will look into resolving the matter. {NY Daily News}

DC Pays For Resident’s Gym Membership

If one of your resolutions for 2016 is “New Year, New You” the District of Columbia is trying to ensure that you stick to your goals. Mayor, Muriel Bowser, has recently announced the fees to use the Department of Parks and Recreation’s fitness center have been waived for residents. DC’s 22 Parks and Recreation centers have an annual revenue of about $22,000. It charges $5 a day ($125 to use its facilities.) Mayor Bowser’s spokesman, Jordan Bennett, said that money generated from the fees, “wasn’t worth the number of people who might be dissuaded from using the facilities because of the cost.” The fee waivers are apart of the Mayor’s FitDC initiative, which encourages residents to utilize the cities resources to adopt healthier, more active lifestyles. {DCist}
