Missouri Politician Wants To Revoke Scholarships From Student Activists

Football players at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) were integral to their former President, Tim Wolfe stepping down for failing to address racial tensions on campus. The team’s coaches as well as faculty and staff of Mizzou supported the student’s decisions to stand up against an injustice. Unfortunately, one politician wants to penalize the football players actions. Representative Rick Brattin, has introduced a bill that would revoke the scholarships of athletes that refuse to play for any reason that isn’t health related. Brattin’s agenda for the bill is unknown as Mizzou scholarships come from private donors and not funds from the state. The football team’s walk-out would have cost the university over $1 million had Wolfe not resigned. Mike Middleton has since been named interim president in a decision that was met with overwhelming approval by student activists. [The Huffington Post]

Michael Jordan Will Donate Millions To Charity Following Lawsuit

Legendary basketball player, Michael Jordan recently won a multi-million dollar settlement against two Chicago grocery stores who illegally used Jordan’s imagine and likeness for their store ads. In 2009, Jewel-Osco and Dominick’s ran congratulatory ads with coupons that referenced Jordan’s induction into the NBA Hall Of Fame. A judge ruled that the stores had violated the Illinois Right of Publicity Act. In the six years since the lawsuit originated, Dominick’s has since closed and lawyers for the former retailer called Jordan’s $8.9 million verdict, “grossly excessive.” Jordan was set to go to trial with Jewel-Osco this month but a recent settlement has resolved both cases. “This was never about the money,” said Jordan who has chosen 23 charities to be recipients of the settlement [Chicago Sun Times]

DA Won’t Press Charges Against Cop Who Slammed Student Into Glass Window

In one of the most bizarre defenses of police brutality, a New York city police officer won’t face charges for slamming a 13-year-old into a window causing near fatal lacerations, because the window was already cracked. In May, 2014, Javier Payne and his friend were arrested for assaulting a man in front of a hookah shop who refused to them cigarettes. When police arrived, Payne was arrested and was allegedly flippant with Sgt. Eliezer Pabon who rammed the boys body into a glass window. In surveillance footage from the incident, Payne is doubled over from the impact. The eighth grader, who weighted 89 pounds had to undergo four hours of emergency surgery to remove shards of glass from his heart and lungs. The outgoing DA, Robert Johnson cleared the sergeant of criminal wrongdoing. The Civilian Complaint Review Board, however, found the Pabon used excessive force. He will face disciplinary charges at a trial next month. Payne’s family has since filed a $25 million lawsuit and have requested incoming Bronx DA, Darcel Clark reopen the case. [NY Daily News]

New Lawsuit Alleges Derek Jeter Didn’t Want Blacks Or Gays Associated With His Underwear Line

Swedish underwear company Frigo filed a multi-million lawsuit against former New York Yankee, Derek Jeter for backing out of an endorsement deal. The company alleges that Jeter, “demanded that (Frigo) not market to the gay community and states that he did not want the Frigo brand to be ‘too gay”. The company’s lawsuit also says that Jeter who is of African American and Irish descent had an issue with 50 Cent being a Frigo brand ambassador. The rapper and entrepreneur was apparently “too urban” for Jeter. In response to the lawsuit, 50 tweeted, “Wow, guess I’m not a Yankees fan anymore?? LETS GO METS?” A spokesman for Jeter says the claims of the suit are “categorically false”. The upscale underwear retail for up to $100 at Neiman Marcus. The company believes it’s loss over $30 million in estimated retail sales from Jeter’s “fraudulent conduct”. Frigo is seeking punitive damages. [NY Daily News]

Final GOP Debate: Trump Wants To Regulate The Internet

In case you missed the Republican debate here are some take aways and tweets that sum up the evening:

  • Favorite jab of the night from Jeb Bush to Donald Trump, “You’re not going to be able to insult your way to the presidency.”
  • Most memorable (and obnoxious) closing remarks from Donald Trump: “Nothing works in our country. If I’m elected president, we will win again. And we will win a lot.”
  • Ironically, Carly Fiorina seemed sexist, as if her issue with Hillary Clinton is the fact that she’s a woman. The executive first made a pro feminism comment and tried to assert her leadership abilities in saying, “I fought my way to the top of corporate America while being called every B-word in the book.” Her closing remarks were “We need to unify our country, we need a real conservative in the White House and we need to defeat Hillary Clinton to take our country back.”
  • Trump wants control over everything, including who can use the world wide web: “We should be using our most brilliant minds to figure out a way that ISIS cannot use the internet…We can do that if we use our good people,” he says. “I don’t want [ISIS] using our internet.”
