One of the highlights of any reception is the happy couple’s first dance, but picking out the right song can be harder than many think.

How can you possibly pick a song that encompasses your relationship and all your hopes for the future with the perfect groove? It’s nearly impossible. Lucky for you, we have a few ideas.

“Spend My Life With You” by Tamia and Eric Benét

This is pretty standard for most Black weddings, but there’s a good reason for it! Tamia and Eric sound so beautiful while singing about the desire to commit to one another. They want to see each other every morning and feel their hearts beating together. Notice we’re talking in plurals and not singular. “Spend My Life” isn’t just one person singing to another. This duet is a conversation between two people that are truly, deeply in love. That’s what you want when thinking about how marriage works.

“As” by Stevie Wonder

What’s a party without a little Stevie Wonder? Stevie belts about the depths of his love for his special person while giving you a little something to boogie to if slow dancing isn’t really your thing. It’s perfect to set the tone of your turnt up reception.

“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

When couples fall in love, they rarely think about the reality of the long haul. You’re vowing to love someone and stand by them for the rest of your natural days. Ed’s song, reminds us that love can endure into old age when your legs don’t work like the used to and your memory fades.

“Halo” by Beyoncé

Beyoncé has plenty of songs about love, but this one has always had a special place in our hearts. It takes a lot of work to love someone, and this song is a great reminder that the work is often worth it.

“Not A Bad Thing” by Justin Timberlake

Being together forever seems like such an easy thing to do while listening to this tune from Justin Timberlake. It’s just every day for the rest of your life with the person you love most. That’s not asking a lot, right?

“At Last by” Etta James (or Christina Aguilera)

Sometimes it takes an eternity to find The One, and this Etta James classic celebrates their arrival. It’s a whole different world when you finally meet the love of your life. Etta’s song perfectly embodies the sweetness of uniting with the right person and seeing how well you two fit together.

“I Blame You” by Ledisi

Good love can transform you from the inside out! No one knows that better than Ledisi. Sometimes all you can do is smile, and when people ask why you’re so happy all the time, you can just point to your boo.
