Simone Biles, the fierce gymnast and native of Columbus, OH, isn’t following in her friend and rival Gabby Douglas’ footsteps; she’s surpassing them. Yesterday, Biles made history by becoming the first woman to win three titles at the 2015 World Gymnastic Championships.

“It’s such an honor, especially coming from the United States,” Biles said to USA Today. The only other woman that has made three total all-around titles is Svetlana Khorkina, the famous Russian gymnast who competed in the Olympics in 1996, 2000 and 2004. “We strive for greatness,” Biles continued.

Biles got the gold medal with a total score of 60.399. Douglas stood below Biles on the podium with a silver medal, a prize she snagged just eight months after her last meet in London. Douglas is just as in awe of her friend as the 5,500 others that were watching contestants’ routines in the stands at yesterday’s championships.

“She’s amazing,” Douglas said. “Me and Simone, we really wanted to go out here and just have fun. We’re like, ‘Let’s crush it! Let’s break the events!’ We just really wanted to enjoy it because it goes by so fast.”

Making repeat wins is regarded as generally impossible, but Biles has only set herself further apart from her rivals over time. She is hasn’t lost a meet in the two and a half years since she first broke out onto the scene in 2013.

Werk, Biles! We can’t wait to see what this superstar athlete does next.
