HB: Who are some of your musical inspirations? You remind us of Brandy and Jhene.

TD: It’s funny we actually went to elementary school together and I went to high school with [Jhene’s] brother, we’re good friends. It’s really dope to see some of my peers bubbling at the same time. I grew up around a lot of oldies. My mom played a lot of oldies like Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross and Aretha and I grew up in church; I was in the choir. It was all for the purpose of learning how to perfect my craft and how to be a vessel and learning that what you have is a gift and how to really use it for the best. But definitely, Kim Burrell, Karen Clark Sheard and the whole Clark Sisters – all of those were playing every morning in my house. And as I grew up, I started developing a love for rap on my own. I think the first rap CD I bought was Jay Z’s, The Black Album in high school. I listened to it before but that was my first time really understating the power behind hip-hop and the lyrics. It moved me in a special way around that time.

HB: So tell us about the new EP…

TD:  It feels like summer time. That’s the energy and the vibe that we wanted to have for the whole EP – dope records to vibe to in the summer. It’s not that the songs were particularly created for that intention but it’s maybe its something that happen subconsciously. Maybe because we were creating them in California where it’s always sunny.

HB: How do you get in your zone to write your own music?

TD: I would say most sessions start with you going in with the producers. Practically everybody I’ve created with was a friend of mine. We go in and we’re vibing and setting the atmosphere. The things that you’ve been going through, the things that have happened during your week or a crazy story somebody told you that you can relate to, they all come out and help set the tone for where everybody is and how we’re going to create. Then, someone will come up with a lyric and then it just flows.

HB: So it’s a collaborative effort?

TD: Well practically all of those songs are a collaborative effort. I feel like that’s when the best work comes because two heads are better than one. I can sit down and write a song but somebody is going to bring a vibrant yellow that I didn’t think to add to the canvas. They’re all collaborative efforts where everybody is just enjoying sharing their perspective of the same story.

HB: What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

TD: I want them to feel honesty and sincerity. I want them to relate. I feel like the topics and what I’m singing about is something everybody can relate to. I just want everyone to be able to find themselves in the music.

HB: When can we expect the album?

TD: The album will be out early fall. So, the EP is “Heart Flavored Summer” and it’s a little excerpt, something to hold you over during this time. But I feel like the album will be more meat and potatoes. “Heart Flavored Summer” is the appetizer; it’s a little taste. I love making music and sharing. I love singing. So if I’m going to go in I’m going to go in. If I’m going to sing it, I’m going to sing it. If I’m gong to tell it, I’m going to tell it. I just want to make quality and classic music. I just want to be able to hear these records in the winter and next fall. That was the whole point. I want to make music that you can listen to anytime.
