The police have released several photos of the suspect and describe him as a White male, 5’9″ with a slender build.

According to the Post and Courier, the police are still unable to identify all of the victims but six women and three men were confirmed killed with three survivors. Investigators are going over any kinds of surveillance and the Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said  “I do believe this was a hate crime.”

Police in Charleston, South Carolina are investigating a shooting at a downtown church where nine people were killed, USA Today reports.

In a press conference early Thursday, Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said eight people were killed at the scene, while another died at a local hospital.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. It is believed to be a hate crime, according to Mullen.

Police say the suspected gunman is still on the loose, the Charleston Post and Courier reports. The suspect is described as a white male, about 21-years-old.

Police have yet to release any additional information about the victims.
