Baltimore Police Department Crumbles In The Wake Of Civil Unrest

This is not a good look for Baltimore’s Police Commissioner, Anthony Batts. Not only are they getting bad publicity for escorting the cops in the Freddie Gray murder trial to prison without using handcuffs (special treatment, much?), but the city is experiencing one of its deadliest months in years and arrests are down by 50 percent. Stronger, more effective police intervention is clearly needed; just yesterday, the bodies of an unidentified woman and her eight year old son were discovered with gun shots to their heads. Nigeria Inaugurates Its New President, Kerry Expands US Military Assistance

Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan’s successor as the president of Nigeria, had his inauguration ceremony today. At the ceremony, Buhari promised “increased prosperity” for the country. Meanwhile, Secretary of State John Kerry has his sights set on helping the Nigerian military defeat the Boko Haram. Kerry has declared that he’ll be expanding US military aid to help Nigeria develop its military training and strategy to bring down the terrorist group. Read the story at the New York Times.

Lower-Class Black Women Have Bigger Risk Of Heart Disease And Stroke

Having low wages poses a bigger issue than just struggling to cover the bills—it poses a threat to our health, too. In a study conducted by a researcher at the National Human Genome Research Institute, results showed that African Americans women whom under the age of 50 and of lower socioeconomic status were twice as likely to suffer from heart disease or stroke than those of higher status. The study also found that lower-income men and women were three times at a greater risk to suffer from cardiovascular problems. Read the story at the Huffington Post.
