After weeks of rising tension in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of police, justice may finally be served. Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced Friday that the 25-year-old’s death has been ruled a homicide. Six officers have been charged in the case and five are in police custody, according to Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Mosby announced that her office has also found probable cause to pursue criminal charges in connection to the case. She said that her review of the case found there had been no reason to detain Gray, and that his arrest was illegal.

According to the medical examiner, the cause of Gray’s death was a critical neck injury sustained during his transfer in a paddy wagon.

“To the people of Baltimore and  the demonstrators across the country, I’ve heard your call for no justice, no peace, your peace is severely needed as I work to bring you justice for the death of Freddie Gray,” Mosby passionately stated.

Shortly after her press conference, President Barack Obama released a statement on the case, saying it is “absolutely vital that the truth comes out on what happened to Freddie Gray,” but adding that he would not comment on the legal processes involved.

“But I can tell you that justice needs to be served,” he said. “All the evidence needs to be presented. Those individuals who are charged obviously are also entitled to due process and rule of law. So I want to make sure that our legal system runs the way it should.”

Later, in a brief and somewhat tense press conference, mayor Rawlings-Blake said she would be “relentless in changing the culture of the police department.”

“There will be justice for Mr. Gray,” she said.

With all of these statements, we are finally starting to feel encouraged.

Mosby even went on to praise the protesters, a huge departure from most officials and members of the media.

“This is a moment, This is your moment, Let’s ensure we have peaceful rallies that ensure systemic changes in our future. Our time is now,” she said.

Mosby also told reporters that she’s not counting solely on what the police department provides. “I uphold the law and I will prosecute any case within my jurisdiction,” she said.

The justice department, led by newly appointed attorney general Loretta Lynch, is also conducting an independent investigation on the matter.
