It’s been over a decade since the last Black model (Naomi Campbell) graced the cover of British Vogue (alone). Although Jourdan Dunn took to Instagram to proclaim her excitement about her new February cover, she never holds her tongue about the racism that still exists in the fashion industry.

“It’s hard being a model regardless, and then being a black model,” she told British Vogue. While most supermodels remain hush on the topic (perhaps out of fear of not booking jobs), Jourdan is the exception. It’s no secret that there is a disturbing lack of Black models represented in the industry.
But this British beauty uses her massive social media following to remind us that well…racism is alive and kicking.

Even though she’s the new face of Maybelline and she’s modeled for Burberry, Topshop, Prada and Victoria’s Secret, that same beauty doesn’t get her booked for some of the biggest fashion shows in the world.
“I have heard, ‘Oh, we haven’t shown any black models this season,’ Jourdan says, It’s messed up. Another time my agent told me, ‘They don’t want any black models this season.'”
It’s the biggest elephant in the fashion room that no one ever wants to address. Or solve for that matter. Here’s to hoping that the more unwarranted closed doors that Jourdan exposes, will bring new opportunities for her and other Black models. #FistPump
