Amber Andujar celebrated a bittersweet victory when the man who raped her and killed her younger brother was sentenced to 110 years in prison. Amber spoke in front of the courtroom, “Today I stand here as a survivor. Even though he took a part of me away, in the end, you did not win,” she said. “We won because I made it.”

Justice has been served for Andujar as her attacker and brother’s killer will spend the rest of his life in jail. The now-14-year-old’s attacker, Osvaldo Rivera was given this lengthy sentence for a list of crimes, including terroristic threats, burglary, attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault. Andujar was 12 when the attack happened. Rivera previously turned down the plea deal that would have given him 65 years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty.

Rivera broke into the Andujars’ home around 2 a.m. on Amber’s birthday. Amber’s little brother, Dominick Andujar heard his sister’s screams and attempted to save his sister from the attack, but Rivera slit the 6-year-old’s throat, killing him. Rivera also knifed Amber, slashing her throat as well. Amber was heroically able to escape, where she ran down the street bleeding out. According to reports, when first responders got to her they reported her wounds as being so deep in her neck that her vocal cords were exposed.

“I want this animal to suffer,” the children’s mother, Debbie Burgos, told the court on Thursday. “He deserves to fear for his life, like my children did in their own home.”

Dominick’s self-sacrifice was one of the most heroic acts we’ve ever seen and he will always be considered a big little hero. However, the worst part is that before the attack ever happened, in Dominick’s kindergarten journal, he wrote: “I am a superhero, I save people.” If only Dominick would have known how true that statement is. RIP.

Such a story, but an amazing display of the justice system actually working. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below.
