Raven-Symoné: “Don’t Label Me African-American Or Gay”

We were almost here for Raven-Symoné’s candid interview with Oprah on “Oprah: Where Are They Now?”…then her pompous celebrity started showing.

“The Cosby Show” and “That’s So Raven” star sat down for an intimate chat about growing up a child star and finally confirmed she’s gay and in a happy relationship with a girlfriend, which has been a topic of speculation ever since she sent out a Tweet in support of gay marriage. We were with her until she started talking about why she’s not into labels and mentioned she doesn’t consider herself to be African-American. Yeah, she took it there!

“I’m tired of being labeled,” she said. “I’m an American. I’m not an African-American; I’m an American,” then added, “I have darker skin. I have a nice, interesting grade of hair. I connect with Caucasian, I connect with Asian, I connect with Black, I connect with Indian, I connect with each culture.”

Oprah knew the repercussions Raven would face, and responded “Oh, girl,” Oprah says, shifting in her chair. “Don’t set up the Twitter on fire… Oh, my lord. What did you just say?”

Our thoughts exactly.  And Oprah called it: the actress is still trending on Twitter and her mentions are in shambles with people wondering why she’s denouncing being an African-American.
