“Saturday Night Live” Adds First Black Anchor To “Weekend Update” Desk

After 39 years of white anchors manning the chairs of “Saturday Night Live’s” segment the “Weekend Update,” a Black stand-up comedian, Michael Che will join the cast. Che, who’s worked for “SNL” behind-the-scenes, will get his shot in the spotlight, making history in the process. Che will replace Cecily Strong, who will stay on the show as a cast member.

“Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny,” show creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels told The New York Times. “It’s always difficult to make changes and make Update different from what’s gone before.”

Earlier this year, “SNL” added Sasheer Zamata to their lineup and two Black writers to LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones to their production staff.
