The New York Mets organization has been accused of discriminating against one of its former top executives for being unmarried and pregnant.

Leigh Castergine, the senior vice president of ticket sales, has filed suit against the organization for allegedly frowning upon her decision to have a baby out of wedlock. The New York Daily News reports that she accuses Mets co-owner Jeff Wilpon of not-so-gently encouraging her to get married because it would help her to earn more money.

In court documents, Leigh claims that was simply one example of how her work environment changed after she announced her pregnancy last September. From the claims she makes in the suit, Jeff was the main person harassing her for her decision and “began to humiliate” Leigh in front of her co-workers because, as he told another colleague, he is “old-fashioned and thinks she should be married before having a baby.”

He even brought it up during a sales meeting to illustrate how strongly he felt about not putting up an ad for e-cigarettes on the field. He allegedly stated that he was as dead set against it as he was “to Leigh having this baby without being married.”

When Leigh took her concern to the Mets’ human resources department, she was told that she should quit her job. Since she and her boyfriend have a baby to raise, Leigh opted not to leave her lucrative position. Instead she was forced out last month for supposedly not meeting her sales goals. Keep in mind, though, that the Mets promoted her just last December after she boosted ticket sales to $84 million.

Adding insult to injury, the Mets only offered her a severance package on the condition that she not sue Jeff or the team. She obviously turned that offer down, and she’s now seeking an undisclosed amount from the team’s corporate side.
