Fans were shocked when news broke that 25-year-old singer Simone Battle had passed away, but today’s update on her passing is even more upsetting: Los Angeles officials have ruled her death a suicide.

The L.A. County Coroner’s Department determined that Simone, who joined G.R.L. after appearing on “X Factor,” died after hanging herself in her West Hollywood home. ABC News reports that no further details on Simone’s passing will be reported, which is perhaps for the best as the public often has a very mixed react to hearing the particulars of someone’s suicide. Whether out of respect for the dead (and obviously hurting) or just not wishing to hear about how someone killed themselves, suicide is a very sensitive subject.

Now that Simone’s death has been ruled a suicide, though, it’s hard not to notice that she is the second celebrity to take their own lives recently. Last month, beloved actor Robin Williams devastated fans, friends and loved ones when he did so after struggling with depression for years.

With the success that her band G.R.L. has enjoyed over the last year, it would seem that Simone had everything to live for. The reality is that no one but the singer really knew her inner struggles. One thing is certain: the world has lost a bright, talented young woman, and that is very sad. Her group expressed their deep sadness on their Twitter page: “Words cannot express the depth of our loss. Simone’s incredible talent was only surpassed by the size of her heart. We will carry her memory with us in everything we do.”
