Last night, R&B songstress and reality television star K. Michelle held an intimate screening for her upcoming musical, “K. Michelle: Rebellious Soul-The Musical,” that is set to premiere tonight on VH1. The private gathering, held at New York City’s The Bryant Park Hotel Theater, brought out some of K. Michelle’s celebrity friends including Basketball Wives’ Jennifer Williams as well as a select group of media personnel and fans.

Before the screening, K. Michelle opened up to the audience about the process of making the musical and how she wanted to create something special for her fans that would represent her album of the same name. Michelle revealed that her good friend and actor, Idris Elba, was responsible for directing the musical and that it was challenging but also rewarding working with him because he’s just “so fine.” We can all agree to that!

The musical took us through a visual journey of K.Michelle’s album equipped with drama, love, sex, heartbreak and pain. While the album served as the soundtrack for the evening, we witnessed K. Michelle as a stripper who fell in love with the wrong man and had her whole life turned upside down in the blink of an eye. While the musical was fairly short and straight to the point, it offered real situations and life lessons that are all too familiar in this day and age.

Following the screening, K revealed that the character she played in her musical was similar to her own life as she too stripped to pay for studio time but also attended Florida A&M University. As a woman who once led a double life she jokingly referred to herself as “Hannah Montana”, as she would dance at night and return to school and the studio after like nothing happened.

“It’s nothing that I’m ashamed of,” K. Michelle told audiences while discussing her musical and it’s correlation to her own life. “It’s part of me.”

While I appreciated K. Michelle’s creative effort in her musical, I’m not sure that the story line is my cup of tea. There were some interesting and humors parts, but overall the plot seemed quite random. You be the judge.  “K. Michelle: Rebellious Soul – The Musical,” premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on VH1.
