One fertility clinic is keeping some very stringent racial boundaries between their clients and donors.

Regional Fertility Program (RFP) is not down with the swirl on any level. The Calgary Herald reports that the clinic refuses to match up clients and donors of different races because it doesn’t want to create any “rainbow families.”

It’s a policy that’s been in place for about 30 years since the facility first opened. Clinic director Dr. Calvin Greene instituted it based on his own opinion that race mixing is bad because kids should be able to easily “identify with their ethnic roots.”

A potential client who identified herself only as Catherine came smack up against the clinic’s professional stance when she, a white woman, was told that she could only choose from among the pool of white donors.

“I was absolutely floored,” the 38-year-old woman told the Herald. Aside from the practice being incredibly racist, Catherine is concerned that many of the same men are fathering higher numbers of children in the area. The chance for genetic overlap resulting from RFP’s rule is just too high for her comfort. She pointed to that as the main reason she was willing to consider getting a donor of a different race.

“Frankly, it’s appalling how many people have the same donors, probably because of this policy,” Catherine explained. “A friend of mine just went through this process and used the donor that I would have picked.”

Catherine’s concerns haven’t fazed Dr. Calvin, who notes that other people working at the clinic agree with his position the mother and child should share a “cultural connection.”

He also pointed to a study by the Assisted Human Reproduction Act that reports racial mixing could negatively affect a child. “I’m not sure that we should be creating rainbow families just because some single woman decides that that’s what she wants,” the doctor said. “That’s her prerogative, but that’s not her prerogative in our clinic.”

The fertility specialist continued to suggest that Catherine stick to her own kind because, he argues, that there are a number of suitable white donors. He concluded the problem is with her, not his policy. Dr. Calvin reasoned, “She needs to look harder, because I can tell you, reasonable people can easily find a suitable donor.”
