32-year-old Tamecca Haskins lost her life by a single gunshot to the chest during an anti-gun violence rally on Lefferts Place in Brooklyn, NY. One other victim is critically injured. “…[T]his should never of happened. My baby, like I said she was outgoing. She was a hard worker, she struggled through school with lupus,” said Haskins’ mother, Vanita Denise Haskins. Haskins was her mother’s only daughter, and she leaves behind a seven-year-old daughter who is unable to understand exactly what happened to her mom.

While the family is keeping it together, they’re shaken by this random and devastating tragedy. Many people attended the rally and Community Advocate Tony Herbert believes that is the key to finding Haskins’ killer. “Somebody saw something and we always try to encourage. That’s the purpose of the vigils and the rallies, is to get people to offer up that mustard seed that will allow the police department to do their job,” said Herbert.

As we all know, people in communities are typically very wary about giving up information on killers. There’s a unspoken code in many urban neighborhoods that keep lips sealed when violent crimes happen because the “snitch” doesn’t want to end up being the next victim. The age-old cliche, “Snitches get stitches” is a terrifying truth. We’re hoping someone is bold enough to step up and offer information on Haskins’ death.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
