The deliciously witty film Dear White People is going to school all of society this fall!
Get your pen and paper (or tablet) ready! According to Deadline.com, class will be in session on October 17 when Dear White People hits theaters. Could the timing be more appropriate?!
Anyone tracking the Justin Simien-directed satire knows that it’s not going to be anything like the more dramatic black films that mainstream audiences have come to love. A new trailer for Dear White People plays on those expectations by mentioning The Blind Side, The Butler and The Help.
Any hope that Dear White People will follow in those footsteps is totally demolished when the cast questions why black people in film are only allowed to fill certain roles and stereotypes.
Of course the new teaser also brings up another interesting hypothesis: did you know that The Gremlins could be about suburban white fear of black culture? When you see how one student breaks it down in the trailer below, you won’t know how you didn’t see it before!
