We’ve only been stalking Michelle Obama and her outstanding closet since early 2009. She’s been dressed by some of the world’s most coveted designers but still manages to shop the racks of J.Crew and H&M. And that’s exactly why she’s been my bff (in my mind) since day one. How much do you think that forest-green Naeem Khan dress she wore at the opening of a new costume gallery at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art really cost? Or that silver Marchesa gown at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner? Maintaining her closet, many items of which are only worn once, could be costing her over $15,000 a month.

But despite what critics say, we are not footing the bill for her fancy fashion picks.

Here’s how Joanna Rosholm, press secretary to the first lady, explains it:

“Mrs. Obama pays for her clothing. For official events of public or historic significance, such as a state visit, the first lady’s clothes may be given as a gift by a designer and accepted on behalf of the U.S. government. They are then stored by the National Archives.”

Wowsers, right! I totally thought there was a clothing allowance for our First Lady. But this definitely explains her repeats, that I am also here for!
