If your name is Rihanna and you’re showing up to the CFDA Awards to be crowned Style Icon, there’s only one rule to follow: Go big or go home!
The pop princess followed this rule to a T tonight when she arrived at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America gala in a Swarovski crystal-embellished see-through gown, channeling the iconic style of Josephine Baker and leaving very little to our imaginations (insert the emoji with the looking eyes here).
RiRi shined bright like a diamond in the custom-made dress by designer Adam Selman, which was comprised of more than 230,000 Swarovski crystals. She completed the look with a flesh-colored thong, matching headpiece, fur and smokey eyes.
Rihanna’s stylist Mel Ottenberg described the look as “so naked.”
“I don’t know if it’s shocking—I’m with her all the time, so my shock gauge is off, but I told her that I thought she was ready for this dress a while ago, and that I wasn’t. I’m the prude, and I’m just catching up,” he told Style.com en route to the big event tonight. “We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous…The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is part of that.”
“So many people didn’t sleep last night,” Ottenberg revealed. “I would say at least eight people worked nonstop from 8 p.m. last night to 3 p.m. today putting on the finishing touches.” He added that the matching turban was all RiRi’s idea. “It brings such a Rihanna feel to the whole thing. It seals the deal.” Check out Adam Selman’s (Ottenberg’s boyfriend) original sketch of the showstopper below.
Each year the CFDA’s honors the industry’s top designers. This year’s prestigious Founder’s Award went to Bethann Hardison, a former model and vocal advocate for diversity on runways.
Other A-list fashionistas of the night included Lupita Nyong’o in a Suno top and pants, Liya Kebede in Wes Gordon, and Solange Knowles, who recovered from her fail at the Met Gala in a simmer Calvin Klein Collection dress.
Previous Fashion Icon Award winners include Lady Gaga, Iman, Kate Moss, Nicole Kidman and Johnny Depp.
