Betabrand, the San Francisco-based online clothing community known for making business attire super casual and comfy, has decided to nix using stick-thin models and opted for real women with PhD’s. Incredible! When you look beyond the ranks of the professionally beautiful, photography becomes a lot more fun,” Betabrand founder, Chris Lindland said in a statement, according to AdWeek. “Our designers cooked up a collection of smart fashions for spring, so why not display them on the bodies of women with really big brains?”

March is Women’s History Month and there are so many ways to celebrate women and this ad campaign is a small, but beautifully effective way to celebrate the vast beauty of women that stretches beyond the physical. Lindland said that the brand’s models are almost always his team’s friends, relatives and colleagues. This year, he asked a Stanford Neuropsychology graduate student if any of her friends would be interested in modeling. And lo and behold, she was and so were other PhD-holders and potentials. So after a quick Facebook model search, Lindland received 60 different smarty pants applicants and handpicked each model for his collection.

So while I am very pleased with this real woman modeling thing Betabrand has going on, I am wondering if there were any PhD holders who applied that didn’t have a modelesque physique? If you notice, all of these “models” are thin and unlike the amazing Dove Real Beauty Campaign, Betabrand strayed from using curvier women. I guess it’s one battle at a time, yes? Might as well just celebrate a brand’s bold move to use real women, no matter how thin they all are.
