Viola Davis is the newest Black actress to land a lead role on Shondaland.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the two-time Academy Award nominee was cast in Shonda Rhimes’ new drama pilot “How to Get Away With Murder.”

“The sexy, suspense-driven legal thriller centers on ambitious law students and their brilliant and mysterious criminal defense professor who become entangled in a murder plot that could rock their entire university and change the course of their lives,” the site reports. Davis plays Annalise DeWitt, a law professor and criminal defense attorney described as “brilliant, passionate, creative, charismatic and ruthless in the courtroom and the classroom.” Her co-stars include Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, Karla Souza, Jack Falahee, Alfie Enoch and Charlie Weber.

This marks the second ABC drama with a Black female lead, following Kerry Washington in Shonda’s mega political hit “Scandal.”

Mrs. Viola Davis is best known for her unforgettable roles in Doubt and The Help.
