“There are 21 million people in slavery as we sit here,” said the filmmaker, who also serves as an ambassador for Anti-Slavery International. “I just hope 150 years from now our ambivalence will not allow another filmmaker to make this film.”

The film’s lead Chiwetel Ejiofor beat Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Christian Bale for the best actor award. During his acceptance speech, Ejiofor thanked McQueen for bringing the true story of Solomon Northup, a free Black man kidnapped and sold into slavery, to life.

“This is yours. I’m going to keep it – that’s the kind of guy I am – but it’s yours,” he said.

Alfonso Cuarón ’s Gravity also won big with six awards, the most of the evening.

Oprah was sewn into her Stella McCartney dress for the BAFTA. She shared a video of the crimson gown on Instagram and wrote, “It’s an hour to go, and this is Raj and Giuseppe, who are literally stitching me into my gown for the red carpet.”

The media mogul, who was nominated for her supporting actress role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, ultimately lost to American Hustle’s Jennifer Lawrence.
