Tonight, Bruno Mars will step on stage with the Hot Chili Peppers as the halftime performer at Super Bowl XLVIII, a huge show that no musician turns down despite not getting paid. That’s right, the 28-year-old singer — just like his predecessors Beyoncé, Madonna, Prince and Janet Jackson — will not be compensated for his 12-minute performance.

Here’s why:

According to reports, the musician’s payment comes in the form of exposure. “He’ll be playing what amounts to a 12-minute commercial for himself, which should boost sales for concert tickets, albums and merchandise,” Forbes  reports. “For context, a 30-second ad costs about $4 million this year.”

NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said the league does not pay, however they do “cover all expenses associated with the performance,” which could easily add up to millions of dollars alone.

So how did Bruno land the big honor?

“We just got that phone call and they started scoping me out,” he said. “They were coming to my shows and they popped the question. It’s one of those things where I feel like it’s early on in my career, but … it’s definitely something on a bucket list. It’s the biggest stage ever. It’s something you’re not gonna say no to.”

It’s already been a big year for the “Grenade” singer. He won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album at last week’s ceremony.
